The Customer Issue:
A combination of market forces and the growth of Hussey Seatway Ltd have driven the need for change. Greater formality and structure was required to enable the company to continue to sustain growth effectively.
Following a LEAN based review of ‘Current’ vs ‘Desired Future’ state, Hussey Seatway, with support from BSMimpact, identified a number of opportunities for improvement; principally, a greater collaboration throughout the project lifecycle to reduce risk and maximise margin.
“Once BSMimpact was introduced, we soon realised that all of our sales, operations and ultimately management structure needed changes.”
Stephen Brackley, Managing Director
The Solution:
A successful transformation requires consideration of many factors including the organisation, the people, the processes and the tools; the transformation at Hussey Seatway was no different. Once the current and future states were documented, BSMimpact developed and implemented an action plan with Hussey Seatway that included the following activities:
Established a formal, standard, project management lifecycle that encouraged up front design to minimise issues occurring later on and defined 5 project stages with collaborative review meetings. Production of working material to manage the key aspects of each project e.g. track delivery, manage risk, issues and changes etc. Each active project was then transitioned into the new project workbook. Introduced a culture of continual improvement supported by a common register of improvements populated by everyday ideas and lessons learned from projects and reviewed at regular intervals. Created a clearer, more defined organisation structure supported by a coherent set of roles and responsibilities. Coaching and knowledge transfer helping introduce staff to the new terminology, processes, tools and in some cases, their new roles.
“The BSM consultant has become a trusted member of our team and continues to provide ongoing support.”
The Benefits:
Hussey Seatway experienced a recognisable improvement in the planning and design of new projects leading to better informed decision making and a reduction in risk. Knowledge transfer across departments and employee satisfaction has increased as a result and led to greater productivity. The new roles that were introduced, along with improved visibility of the ‘project pipeline’, has also resulted in better stock control and reduced costs.
“The changes that BSMimpact led and helped to implement are having an increasing influence on the way we work and our results. I am very happy to endorse BSMimpact’s work at HSW”
